Message: Whoever can best answer my question.  I have watched Mr Richards' video about inverted nipples and found it very interesting.  Both of my nipples are now inverted, but they were not always so.  My right nipple inverted after my son was born in 1986 - I did not breastfeed or even attempt to; I was given a shot in hospital to stop milk production.  My left nipple inverted after my daughter was born in 2006 - I did attempt to breastfeed but was unsuccessful.  I gamely tried to express milk for a few weeks after returning home from hospital, but had no success.  The left one everts occasionally in the shower or when I wake up, but only briefly.  When it does evert, it is "closed".  The right one can be teased out slightly but never completely, and it always looks "open" when it does.  I hope you understand what I m

 ean by closed and open!

I am just wondering if it's common for pregnancy to be the cause of inverted nipples (particularly with 20 years in between), or if I'm on my own!  Neither my breasts nor my nipples are painful in any way and I do regular self-checks and have not found any lumps.

I think the Niplette might work on the left one, but with the right one I'm not so sure.  I don't think they are grade 2 and certainly aren't grade 3 (based on Mr Richards' descriptions), but wonder what you might think.  Obviously, not having examined me I don't expect a conclusive response, but any suggestions or further information would be appreciated.

Many thanks

Dear Lisa

Thank you for your email and questions.

Inverted nipples often occur following the birth of children- the cause for this is uncertain but may be due to shortening of the milk ducts.

In my experience the Nipplette is usually only effective for grade 1 inverted nipples.  That is ones that come out and stay out for a period of time.

For grade 2 and 3 nipples the best solution is inverted nipple correction surgery.  This is usually performed under Local anaesthetic and takes approximately 15 minutes per side.

If think you may wish to breast feed in the future it is sometimes possible to stretch the shortened ducts rather than divide them.  By keeping them intact milk will be able to flow through them.  There is however and increased risk of the inversion recurring if the ducts are not divided.

For grade 3 nipples or if you are not planning to breast feed a more reliable approach is to divide the ducts.  This is again usually performed under Local Anaesthetic and involves minimal scarring and does not usually alter nipple sensation.

I hope this has been helpful- if you feel I can be of any further help please feel free to contact us again.  Alternatively if you would like to schedule an appointment to discuss the options please contact us via the Website or by ringing 01844 2143662.

With best wishes

Hello and many thanks for your response.

I definitely don’t need to breastfeed again – I’m 46 now and my daughter came as quite a surprise!

I don’t think I’m ready for surgery as the nipples are only aesthetically annoying – if I change my mind though, you’ll be the first to know.  I’ve been trying to find out for years why my perfectly normal nipples went undercover after pregnancy and your video information was the first time I had any real, sensible information.

I greatly appreciate your time.

Kind regards

Lisa

I just wanted to post about my experience with Mr Richards and Aurora clinics regarding inverted nipple correction surgery in the hope that it will help other women with the same problem Apologies if it's a bit long!

I booked a consultation in October at The Gatehouse clinic in Northampton, and from the minute I walked in I felt welcome, and relaxed over what was a very personal and difficult thing for me to discuss. The consultation was with Mr Richards himself and his clinic manager/nurse Aggie (who is very sweet and looked after me from start to finish), and during it the procedure was explained to me and I got a chance to ask questions etc. I actually got a bit upset in the consultation because I was feeling very, very self conscious but I was completely reassured and very well looked after. Mr Richards examined me and he made it seem like such a normal and common condition that I ended up feeling no where near as embarrassed as I thought I would. For the first time I felt as though I would be able to achieve what I wanted, (especially since having been to consultation at Transform where I left crying because the surgeon told me there was no hope for me!).

Following the consultation, I wanted to get the procedure done as quickly as possible and the clinic were fantastic in organising this and got me in a week later which was just incredible. The team couldn't do enough to help me find cheap nearby hotels and generally make the experience less stressful. On the day of the operation I arrived at the hospital (Three Shires) and was met by Aggie who took my pre op pictures and was there to look after me. Before I knew it I was on the operating table having the local anaesthetic injected (truthfully, this was the most painful part of the whole surgery but completely bearable) with Aggie holding my hand! My biggest fear was that I'd be able to feel the procedure but Mr Richards had started before I'd even realised! Both sides took about 40 minutes, and after being bandaged up I was back in reception with a cup of tea . I was terrified of being in pain when the LA wore off but I couldn't feel anything, except the odd twinge now and again- i honestly couldn't believe it wasn't more painful!

A week later I returned to have the dressings removed with Aggie. The results were completely fantastic, I couldn't be happier. I couldn't believe in the space of three weeks something that has bothered me for 20 years had been sorted out. I'm nearly 4 weeks post op now and my nipples look better every day- I still wake up and can't believe I have them!

Anyway, sorry to have gone on a bit! But I highly recommend Aurora for this surgery, Mr Richards and his Manager Aggie Oakley are really lovely people and the surgery has completely changed my life. I can't thank them enough! If this is something you are thinking of getting don't wait-You won't regret it!
